The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit — meaning you can work for any Canadian employer in any occupation. It is issued after graduating from an eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and is valid for a duration equal to your program length, up to 3 years maximum.

How to Apply for PGWP
Apply online through your IRCC account within 180 days of receiving your final transcript or official letter of completion. You will need: your study permit, transcripts, diploma/degree certificate, and passport. You can work while your PGWP application is being processed (implied status), as long as your study permit has expired no more than 90 days ago. Processing time: 2–5 months in 2026.
From PGWP to Permanent Residence
The PGWP strategy for PR: Graduate → PGWP → 1+ year skilled work experience in Canada → Apply for Express Entry (Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker, or Provincial Nominee Program). In 2025–2026, Express Entry CRS scores for CEC draws have ranged from 421–491. Having a provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points, making PR nearly guaranteed.
