However, competitive universities — particularly the Ivy League, MIT, Stanford, and UC system — still strongly favour or require SAT/ACT scores. OPT (Optional Practical Training) allows F-1 students to work in the USA in a field related to their studies for up to 12 months after graduation. STEM OPT is an extension available to graduates of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) programmes — extending work authorization to a total of 3 years. This is a massive advantage: 3 years to work, gain experience, and potentially secure an H-1B work visa sponsorship from a US employer. It effectively gives you a head start on building a career in the USA.

Yes, with restrictions. F-1 students can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic term (e.g. library, cafeteria, university research labs, administrative offices). During summer and winter breaks, you can work full-time on campus (40 hours/week). Off-campus work is not permitted in the first academic year, but after that, students may apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for approved internships related to their major. Many Nepali students cover a significant portion of living expenses through on-campus work.

GRE requirements vary by university and programme. Many top programmes in Computer Science, Engineering, and Sciences traditionally require GRE scores, though an increasing number have moved to "GRE optional" policies in recent years. Business programmes generally require GMAT instead of GRE. EVEC advises students to take the GRE unless they're applying specifically to GRE-waived programmes — a strong score (320+) can unlock additional scholarship opportunities and strengthen your application considerably. The F-1 visa interview is typically brief (2–5 minutes) and focuses on three main things: (1) Why this university and programme? Know your university, programme, and why it suits your career goals. (2) Financial capacity — be clear about who is funding your education and how. Bring solid financial documents. (3) Intent to return to Nepal — demonstrate ties to Nepal (family, property, career plans) to show you intend to return after completing your studies. Plan for a timeline of 12–18 months for the full process. This includes: test preparation (IELTS/TOEFL: 3–4 months, SAT/GRE: 4–6 months), application preparation and submission (October–January for September intake), receiving admission decisions (February–April), scholarship negotiation, I-20 processing, SEVIS fee payment, DS-160 application, embassy interview scheduling (allow 2–3 months lead time in Nepal), and pre-departure preparation.
