SDS Eligibility Requirements
To apply under SDS from Nepal, you must meet ALL of the following:
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Country of residence | Nepal (legal residents — Nepali citizens) |
| IELTS or TEF Canada | IELTS Academic or General: minimum 6.0 in each band (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). No band below 6.0. |
| Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) | CAD 10,000 in a participating Canadian financial institution (CIBC, Scotiabank, BMO, RBC, TD) |
| First-year tuition payment | Full first-year tuition must be paid upfront to the DLI before applying |
| Provincial medical exam | Medical exam from an IRCC-designated panel physician in Nepal if requested |
| No prior refused visas | No refusal history for Canada from within the last 10 years |
GIC: How to Get It
The GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) must be purchased from a participating Canadian bank. You deposit CAD 10,000 into a special investment account — the bank provides you a confirmation letter for your visa application. Upon arrival in Canada, the GIC converts to a student bank account and releases approximately CAD 833.33/month for 12 months as a living allowance. Banks offering GICs for international students: CIBC (recommended — dedicated international student program), Scotiabank, BMO, TD. You can apply for a GIC online from Nepal before arriving — process takes 3–7 business days.
SDS vs Non-SDS Processing Times
| Application Type | Processing Time |
|---|---|
| SDS — Student Direct Stream | ~20 business days (approximately 4 weeks) |
| Non-SDS — Regular stream | 8–16 weeks |
Can I use PTE instead of IELTS for Canada SDS?
As of 2026, the SDS program specifies IELTS Academic or General Training or TEF Canada (French test) as the accepted English tests. PTE is NOT currently accepted for SDS. Students wishing to use SDS must have IELTS with minimum 6.0 in all four bands.
What happens to my GIC money if I don't go to Canada?
If your study permit is refused or you decide not to attend, most GIC providers (CIBC, TD) have cancellation policies that allow you to recover your GIC funds, minus any fees. Check the specific bank's cancellation policy before purchasing.
