Cost of Living in Tokyo vs Osaka for Nepali Students

One of the biggest concerns for Nepali students planning to study in Japan is the cost of living. Japan is famous for its high standard of living, but managing your finances as an international student is highly dependent on where you choose to live.

The two most popular destinations are Tokyo (the bustling capital) and Osaka (the vibrant cultural and economic hub of the Kansai region). Let’s break down the cost of living in both cities.

1. Accommodation (Rent)

Rent will be your biggest monthly expense. In Japan, students typically live in dormitories, share houses, or private apartments (called “mansion” or “apato”).
* Tokyo: Rent is notoriously high. A basic share house room or small apartment on the outskirts of Tokyo typically costs JPY 50,000 to JPY 75,000 per month.
* Osaka: Rent is significantly cheaper. You can find similar accommodation in Osaka for JPY 35,000 to JPY 50,000 per month.

2. Food and Groceries

Eating out every day in Japan can get expensive, but cooking at home is very affordable. Both cities have cheap supermarkets like Gyomu Super or Tamade.
* Tokyo: Around JPY 35,000 to JPY 45,000 per month. Eating out is slightly more expensive in the capital.
* Osaka: Around JPY 25,000 to JPY 35,000 per month. Osaka is famous as “Japan’s Kitchen” and boasts incredible, affordable street food and cheap local eateries.

3. Utilities (Electricity, Gas, Water) and Internet

Utilities are relatively standard across the country, though Tokyo might be slightly higher due to basic rates.
* Tokyo: JPY 10,000 – 12,000 per month.
* Osaka: JPY 8,000 – 10,000 per month.
* Mobile/Internet: Both cities will cost you around JPY 3,000 – 5,000 for a student SIM card with data.

4. Transportation

Japan’s train network is incredible. As a student, you will buy a commuter pass (Teikiken) between your home station and school, which offers a massive discount.
* Tokyo: Commuting costs are higher due to longer average commute times. Expect JPY 8,000 to JPY 12,000 per month (outside your commuter pass).
* Osaka: The city is more compact. Expect JPY 5,000 to JPY 8,000 per month.

Earning Part-Time (Arubaito)

The great news is that international students in Japan can work up to 28 hours per week (and up to 40 hours during long holidays).
* Tokyo Minimum Wage: ~JPY 1,113/hour. You can earn roughly JPY 100,000 – 120,000/month, easily covering your living expenses.
* Osaka Minimum Wage: ~JPY 1,064/hour. You can earn roughly JPY 90,000 – 110,000/month.

While you earn slightly more in Tokyo, the cost of rent heavily favors Osaka, making Osaka a fantastic, budget-friendly option for Nepali students without sacrificing the big-city experience.
