The Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV) allows you to live and work in New Zealand for up to 3 years after completing your qualification. The duration depends on your level of study and where you studied: graduates of postgraduate or bachelor's degrees from most NZ institutions qualify for a 3-year PSWV, while diploma graduates may receive 1–2 years. This is one of the most generous post-study work policies in the world.
Yes — if you are studying a full-time degree-level programme (bachelor's or above) at an approved New Zealand institution, your partner may be eligible for an open work visa during your study period. Additionally, when you receive your PSWV, your partner can also apply for a work visa, giving you both up to 3 years to build your careers in NZ together.
The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) is a points-based system where you earn points for skilled employment, your qualification, age, and experience in NZ. During your PSWV period, you can work in a skilled job, accumulate the required points, and submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). For most undergraduate programmes, you need an overall IELTS band of 6.0 with no individual band below 5.5. The NZ Student Visa itself does not set a specific IELTS requirement — it is set by each institution. New Zealand universities have two main intakes: February (Semester 1) and July (Semester 2). February is the main intake with the widest course availability. For a February intake, begin your preparation at least 6–8 months in advance — meaning apply from July onwards.
