What Is IELTS and Why Is It Required?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world's most widely taken English language proficiency test, accepted by over 11,500 universities, employers, immigration authorities, and professional bodies in 140 countries. For Nepali students planning to study in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, or Ireland, IELTS is the standard English requirement for student visa applications and university admissions.
IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English. It is offered in two formats: Academic (for undergraduate and postgraduate admissions) and General Training (for secondary education, work experience, and migration purposes). Both formats test Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Scores are reported on a 9-band scale, with band 6.5 typically required for bachelor's degrees and band 7.0 for master's programmes at top universities in Australia and the UK.
IELTS Score Requirements by Country
The minimum IELTS band score required varies by country and institution:
- Australia: Band 6.0–6.5 for most undergraduate degrees; Band 6.5–7.0 for postgraduate and nursing/health programmes; Band 6.0 overall for a student visa
- United Kingdom: Band 6.0–6.5 for most degrees; Band 6.5–7.0 for Russell Group universities; Band B2 equivalent (6.0) for Tier 4 student visa
- Canada: Band 6.0–6.5 for most Canadian universities; some programmes and immigration streams require 6.5–7.0
- New Zealand: Band 6.0 for most programmes; Band 6.5 for postgraduate study
- Ireland: Band 6.0–6.5 for most degrees; Band 6.5 for nursing and medicine
IELTS Academic vs General Training — Which Do You Need?
IELTS Academic is required for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes worldwide. If you are applying to a university in Australia, UK, Canada, USA, or New Zealand for a bachelor's or master's degree, you need the Academic module. IELTS General Training is used for secondary education, migration (Australian and Canadian immigration streams), and some work visa applications. EVEC Learning Center prepares students for both modules in the same course. Your trainer will confirm which module you need based on your specific application and destination country during the initial diagnostic session.
