JLPT vs NAT-TEST: Which is Better for Your Japan Student Visa?

When applying to study in Japan from Nepal, demonstrating Japanese language proficiency is a critical step—both for university admissions and for securing your COE (Certificate of Eligibility) and student visa.

Two of the most popular language exams are the JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test) and the NAT-TEST. But what is the difference, and which one should you take?

JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test)

The JLPT is the global standard for evaluating Japanese language skills. It is highly respected by universities, language schools, and employers throughout Japan.

• Frequency: Held only twice a year (July and December).
• Levels: N5 (Beginner) to N1 (Advanced).
• Format: Multiple-choice, covering vocabulary, grammar, reading, and listening.
• Pros: It is the most universally recognized certification. If you are applying for a university degree or a job in Japan, the JLPT is usually mandatory.
• Cons: Because it is only held twice a year, missing the registration or failing the test can delay your study abroad plans by six months.

NAT-TEST

The NAT-TEST is very similar to the JLPT in structure and difficulty, but it is designed specifically for students entering Japan.

• Frequency: Held six times a year (February, April, June, August, October, December).
• Levels: 5Q (Beginner) to 1Q (Advanced) – directly corresponding to JLPT N5 to N1.
• Format: Similar to the JLPT, focusing on reading, grammar, vocabulary, and listening.
• Pros: Flexibility! Because it is held every two months, it is perfect for students who need a language certificate quickly to meet tight visa or COE deadlines. Results are also issued within three weeks.
• Cons: While accepted by almost all Japanese language schools and the immigration bureau for student visas, some prestigious universities or corporate employers may strictly require the JLPT.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose the NAT-TEST if:
* You are applying to a Japanese Language School and need a certificate quickly to file your COE.
* You missed the JLPT registration deadline.
* You want faster results.

Choose the JLPT if:
* You are applying directly to a Japanese University for a Japanese-medium degree program (which usually requires JLPT N2).
* You plan to seek full-time professional employment in Japan.
* You are applying for the MEXT scholarship (having JLPT certification is a strong advantage).
