Why Study in the UK?

UK degrees are typically shorter and therefore cheaper in total than equivalent degrees in Australia or Canada — a 3-year bachelor’s or 1-year master’s means less time (and less money) to graduation. The Graduate Route visa, introduced in 2021, allows graduates to live and work in the UK for 2 years (3 years for PhD) without requiring employer sponsorship — a significant improvement over the pre-2021 system.

UK University Application Process
UK undergraduate applications go through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) at ucas.com. You can apply to up to 5 universities in a single UCAS application. For postgraduate applications, most universities have direct application portals. Key timelines:
- UCAS undergraduate: Opens September; main deadline January 31 for most courses (October 15 for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine)
- Postgraduate (master’s): Rolling admissions; popular programs fill by March–April for September intake; January intake available at many universities
Required documents: academic transcripts + certificates (attested), IELTS/PTE result, personal statement (UCAS) or SOP, two references, and passport copy. A CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is issued by the university once you accept an offer — this is needed for your visa application.
UK Student Visa Requirements
The UK Student visa (formerly Tier 4) requires: a valid CAS from a licensed Student sponsor institution, evidence of sufficient funds (tuition fees + living costs), IELTS for UKVI or equivalent, and — for Nepali nationals — biometrics submission. Financial requirement: GBP 1,334/month (London) or GBP 1,023/month (outside London) for the duration of your course up to 9 months, plus any outstanding tuition fees. The visa fee is GBP 490 for applications from outside the UK.

A 1-year master’s in the UK (outside London) costs approximately GBP 13,000–28,000 tuition + GBP 12,276 living = GBP 25,000–40,000 total — significantly cheaper in elapsed time than a 2-year master’s in Australia or Canada, even if annual costs are comparable.
Post-Study Work — The Graduate Route Visa
After graduating from a UK university, you can apply for the Graduate Route visa, which allows you to live and work (or look for work) in the UK for 2 years (3 years for PhD graduates). Unlike Tier 2 (Skilled Worker), the Graduate Route has no salary requirement and no employer sponsorship requirement during the 2-year period. This gives you significant flexibility to find the right job, gain experience, and potentially transition to the Skilled Worker visa for longer-term UK settlement.
Part-Time Work During Studies
UK Student visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week during term time (the same limit as before 2021). During university vacations, you can work full-time (no hour restriction). UK minimum wage in 2026 is GBP 11.44/hour (18–20 year olds) to GBP 12.21/hour (21+). At 20 hours/week, you earn approximately GBP 975–1,000/month — enough to partially offset rent outside London.
What IELTS score do I need for UK universities?
Most UK universities require IELTS for UKVI 6.0–6.5 overall. Top universities (Russell Group) typically require 6.5–7.0. The score must specifically be "IELTS for UKVI" — standard IELTS is not accepted for UK Student visa applications. Check your specific university's requirements on their admissions page.
Is a UK master's degree 1 year or 2 years?
Most UK master's degrees are 1 year (3 terms of taught coursework + dissertation). Some professional and integrated master's programs are 1.5–2 years. This makes UK master's degrees significantly faster and cheaper in total than Australian (1.5–2 years) or Canadian (2 years) equivalents.

Yes. Oxford and Cambridge accept applications from Nepali students. Admission is highly competitive — you'll need an outstanding academic record (top grades in NEB +2, typically 90%+ or equivalent), excellent IELTS, strong references, and a compelling personal statement.
