IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is jointly managed by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English. The Academic version is what most study-abroad students need.

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a computer-based English proficiency test owned by Pearson PLC. It is 100% computer-scored — no human examiners — which means faster results and, many students feel, a fairer assessment of non-native accents.

PTE Scoring — Integrated and Enabling Skills

PTE uses a unique “enabling skills” model. Your responses are analysed for Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Written Discourse, Grammar, and Vocabulary separately, and these roll up into your four communicative skills scores (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening). Some question types affect multiple skills at once — for example, “Summarise Spoken Text” (you listen, then write) contributes to both Listening and Writing scores.

IELTS Scoring — Band Descriptors

IELTS uses human-marked band descriptors for Writing (Task Achievement / Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy) and Speaking (Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, Pronunciation). Your overall IELTS band is the average of all four skill scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5.

Which Is Harder to Score On?

Neither is objectively harder — they test the same underlying ability. However, many Nepali students report:

• PTE Reading is time-pressured — the integrated format means some questions require re-reading while also writing answers

• IELTS Speaking Band 7 requires vocabulary and idiomatic usage that PTE’s AI may accept at a lower threshold
